Los otros esenciales: el día a día de un trabajador de la limpieza del CEAR

Su tarea: desinfectar el espacio donde las bacterias intrahospitalarias se llevan una buena cantidad de víctimas cuando los enfermos son entubados. Se acostumbraron a protocolos y cuidados extremos. Este es el relato de un trabajador de la limpieza que era panadero y de repente se encontró entreteniendo a pacientes y conviviendo con la muerte en uno de los lugares más dramáticos de la época.

Un día estás trabajando en la panadería de un barrio, desde muy temprano, moldeando la masa para los panes y metiéndolos al horno; y meses más tarde estás esperando que la jornada termine antes de comenzar mientras le das marcha a la moto y te dirigís a un centro de asistencia respiratoria donde observás camillas que entran y salen en medio de una pandemia que provocó más de 3 millones de muertes en el mundo.

“A veces no te dan ganas de entrar: ‘¡otro día más!’, pienso. Te pudre el covid. Pero al final te acostumbrás”, asegura Nicolás Ramirez a Revista BIFE, un trabajador de la limpieza del CEAR (Centro de Emergencia Respiratoria CEAR) en Santa Rosa, a quien el destino le hizo conocer muy de cerca la muerte, desde el momento que empezó con su nuevo trabajo: desinfectar las salas de internación para pacientes con coronavirus.

“Esta segunda ola nos mató pero me fui acostumbrando. Por ahora no tuve que pasar por algo difícil”, dice Nicolás.

Al igual que médicos y enfermeros, los trabajadores de la limpieza se exponen a diario no sólo al covid, sino también a todo tipo de enfermedades intrahospitalarias. Se acostumbraron rápido a protocolos y cuidados especiales; a experimentar dolorosas despedidas entre familiares y pacientes; y otras veces sonreír –como lo hace Nicolás– a los internados para llevar un poco de calma y distracción a días de incertidumbres desesperada.

El destino le hizo conocer la muerte de muy cerca, desde el momento que empezó con su nuevo trabajo: desinfectar las salas de internación de pacientes con coronavirus.

El desinfectador

Si no se aprende, uno termina por acostumbrarse: a los extremos cuidados, a la desinfección habitual; a la realización del trabajo que termina volviéndose automatizado. Todos los días el mismo protocolo, la misma preparación. Se pone un traje de seguridad y comienza con la desinfección del lugar. Hay bata, barbijos, botas, máscara, cofia, y casi siempre dos pares de guantes; en un carro dos baldes, lavandina por un lado y detergente por otro. Nicolás entra y sale de las salas de internación llevando a cabo la desinfección. Una lluvia de alcohol rosea su ropa desde que entra hasta que sale para ir a su casa. “Hay que estar preparado, es todo rápido. A veces se desinfecta 2 o 3 veces la misma cama”, dice.

El trabajo de desinfección es permanente en la zona de clínica médica. Sector donde se encuentran pacientes que no requieren hasta el momento respiradores, como sí sucede en la Unidad de Terapia Intensiva (UTI). “Cuando se va uno, se entra a hacer la cama al toque, más que nada en terapia”, explica Ramírez.

A pesar del automatismo del trabajo de desinfección, en ese entrar y salir de las salas de internación, Nicolás se relaciona con los pacientes a diario. Recuerda que una vez le tocó cruzarse con una ex compañera del secundario pero que no lo reconoció por la máscara. La veces que pone música desde una radio que se olvidó un paciente. Los chistes que utiliza oportunamente; una conversación que tuvo con una mujer internada antes de tomarse unos días de vacaciones, y que fue, sin saber, la última.

“Yo los vuelvo locos, trato de ponerle onda, sino parece un velorio. Cuando entro con las kinesiólogas le hago el chiste: ¿A ver si se ponen en forma, a ver si juegan en Boca o River”, confiesa Nicolás, aunque reconoce que muchas veces se pierde el ánimo entre los pacientes al sentirse deteriorados, pero que él sigue provocando una sonrisa a pesar de todo.

Cercanía con la muerte

Nicolás recuerda aquella conversación con una mujer de Santa Rosa, de unos 46 años. “Espero que cuando vuelva de mis vacaciones no te vea más acá”, le dijo Nico. “Ojalá” respondió ella. Al cabo de 2 semanas Nicolás había vuelto al trabajo y la mujer había empeorado del todo. “Cuando empiezan a verse los familiares por el lugar es porque algo grave va a pasar”, dice Nicolás y confiesa haber sido uno de los días donde se sintió realmente “triste”.

Empezar a reconocer los momentos críticos de los pacientes es una situación que se convierte habitual para el trabajador de la limpieza, una predicción que se incorpora con el automatismo de la costumbre en el CEAR. Nicolás lo comprende cuando observa que los médicos colocan los biombos alrededor de los pacientes, esto significa que la persona no va a salir. “Impacta como lo digo, pero es así, y uno se acostumbra”.

Nunca había sido tan consciente de la muerte hasta que comenzó a trabajar en la limpieza del Hospital Lucio Molas. Si los médicos o enfermeros se preparan para sobrellevar circunstancias extremas, cercanas a la muerte; este tipo de trabajador tuvo que acostumbrarse. La simpleza se connota en el tono de voz de Nicolás: gestos por momentos de impaciencia, una dosis de humor latente en cada instante; en el fondo con la tranquilidad  de que lo peor puedo haber pasado y que en definitiva terminó acostumbrándose rápido a todo.
