De una hermosa y caudalosa cascada por donde corre un río a 3.2 metros cúbicos de agua por segundo, se desprenden finísimas gotas que se impregnan en el rostro de uno, entusiasmado por el espectáculo. El viento carga con dichas gotas, y en el punto más álgido, en el que se concentra todo el vigor de la cascada -a 3.000 metros de altura- utilizada para la generación de energía hidroeléctrica, se forman remolinos en el aire que se deshacen por la intervención de otras brisas, y que allanan el camino para escurrirse entre las rocas, las colinas y los pinos de este bosque encantador en Sueva, a una hora y media de Bogotá. En esta zona, rica en páramos -cuyo ecosistema representa el 75% del agua potable en Colombia-, viven diversos animales, entre ardillas y puercoespines, pero acaso los dueños del lugar sean mansos “osos de anteojos” que nunca se relacionan con las 50 personas que residen aquí. En general son campesinos, se dedican a la agricultura y la ganadería para autoabastecerse; y, separadas y salpicadas sobre las verdes colinas, habitan pintorescas casas donde, en una de ellas, viven dos nuevos cafeteros: Sofía y Alejandro.
Son amables personas, tan amables que sanamente compiten a escoger la mejor opción para que uno, huésped privilegiado, pueda desenvolverse con comodidad. No sé si la bella relación que tienen es producto de la quietud, la paz y el reposo que provee este lugar, pero es gratificante verlos interactuar: entre ellos no persiste ninguna euforia efímera, más bien flotan de la mano sobre ese lago calmo, duradero y romántico. Parece que siempre uno sacrifica una pequeña comodidad para que el otro pueda sentirse todavía un poco mejor. Se cuidan como si fueran de cristal. Sobre todo ella, que es tierna y al mismo tiempo guerrera. Pero jamás, ninguno de los dos, sobrepasan la delgada línea que separa la atención de la invasión.
Separadas y salpicadas sobre las verdes colinas, habitan pintorescas casas donde, en una de ellas, viven dos nuevos cafeteros: Sofía y Alejandro
Alejandro es de un pueblo cerca, tiene 29 años, es pelilargo y viste con la ropa suelta. Saluda con vivacidad a sus vecinos y se entusiasma cuando habla sobre un tema que le interesa. Sin embargo, no es extrovertido. Se suele perder en una rama, un ave, o vaya uno a saber en qué. Tiene una rica vida interior. Sofía, por otro lado, es más extrovertida, tiene 31 años, es de Bogotá y vive cada momento con desbordante alegría. Se mueve con vitalidad, y habla segura y de corrido con un castellano casi perfecto mientras sus manos se mueven en una sutil danza colombiana.
Sofía es muy dulce con Alejandro. Le dice “amor”, le dice “bebé” o le dice “baby”; y aunque él es menos demostrativo que ella, me da la impresión que él está más enamorado; pues ella es muy hermosa. Tiene una sonrisa tan natural que uno no se aburre de verla. Cuando está vestida de cafetera, con gorro y con barbijo, sobre tres lunares de chocolate quedan sus ojos descubiertos, tan ligeros y delicados.
Empezaron la aventura del café con la idea de tener en su casa solo “para el tintico”. Pero rápidamente descubrieron que era de muy buena calidad (la especie que cosechan es el arábico tradicional, que casi no queda en Colombia ya que se ha modificado genéticamente para que sea resistente a las enfermedades; pero como ellos están a 3.000 metros de altura, no reciben ninguna plaga). Empezaron dándoles a sus amigos, hasta que un día los visitó un catador y les dijo “este café es extraordinario”. Desde entonces, hace ocho meses, comercializan café.
Primero cosechan los granos que alcanzan el estado de madurez, normalmente de color rojo, llamado “café cereza”. Después lo despulpan, es decir, retiran la cereza del grano, para dejarlos en reposo y poder, luego, lavarlo con agua. Una vez hecho este procedimiento, se exponen al sol unos siete días. Más adelante, se saca la cáscara que cubre el grano, llamada “pergamino”. Y finalmente lo tuestan -en un horno que construyó el abuelo de Alejandro- a una temperatura que va desde los 150 a 200 grados. Por ahora, producen tres cargas de café que equivalen a 375 kilos, y tienen la ambición de doblar la carga el año que viene, extendiendo el terreno al que se mudaron hace ya más de un año, en este hermoso bosque que ahora es tranquilo y seguro. Pero no siempre lo fue.

En algún momento Sueva fue centro de conflicto entre el Estado y la guerrilla. Por ejemplo, en esta zona el 3 de julio de 1995 hubo una balacera donde terminaron quemando a cinco policías en la cancha municipal. Dos años después, hubo otro enfrentamiento entre la guerrilla y el Ejército. Los habitantes del lugar comenzaron a acondicionar habitaciones sin ventanas para refugiarse ante cualquier contingencia. En 1999, la guerrilla retomó los ataques y destruyó la estación de la policía con una bomba. Un cuarto intento ocurrió el 16 de febrero del 2001, cuando se abrió una balacera entre policía y guerrilla por más de una hora, sin víctimas fatales. En aquel momento decían que la situación se había complicado desde que “cerraron el paso a los guerrilleros por la zona del Sumapaz” . Sin embargo, todo esto quedó en el pasado, este pueblo ya no es centro de conflicto de nada, y la guerrilla no representa una amenaza en el país. Más bien, la amenaza hoy quedó reducida sólo a los paramilitares.
El paramilitarismo es un fenómeno histórico vinculado a la acción de grupos armados ilegales de extrema derecha, organizados formalmente a partir de los 70, con el fin de combatir a las guerrillas sin el obstáculo de la legalidad que tenían los militares. El paramilitarismo fue teniendo cada vez más poder, y en 1982 el Estado desarrolló la Estrategia de Conflicto de Baja Intensidad como respuesta a la amenaza que representaban los grupos de extrema izquierda y extrema derecha. Pero fracasó, ya que aumentaron los atentados y las masacres, gracias a la infiltración del narcotráfico como medio de financiación. El origen se da cuando el M-19 secuestró a Martha Ochoa, hermana de los narcotraficantes del Cartel de Medellín, quienes crearon el MAS (Muerte A Secuestradores), germen -según diversos analistas- del moderno paramilitarismo. En los 90 conformaron una entidad mayor, denominada “Autodefensas Unidas de Colombia” (AUC), siendo actores independientes que se involucran de manera directa con el narcotráfico, entre expulsiones de civiles y masacres; y que tuvieron un objetivo político: asesinar cualquier brote enfocado en realizar un cambio sociopolítico en Colombia.
En 2016, bajo la presidencia de Juan Manuel Santos, se firmó el Acuerdo de Paz con las Farc, pero no sucedió nada de lo que estaba pactado. No avanzó ninguna reforma política ni tampoco la Ley de Tierras, que debió sentar los principios de la reforma rural. Mucho menos ocurrió con las llamadas garantías de seguridad y con el desmonte del paramilitarismo y sus bandas sucesoras (click). Según el documento del Indepaz, para octubre del 2017 se habían identificado la presencia de grupos “narcoparamilitares” en 275 municipios de 28 departamentos del país.
Con la asunción de Iván Duque como presidente -en agosto del 2018-, ahijado político del ex mandatario Álvaro Uribe, quien siempre tuvo una estrechísima relación con el paramilitarismo (click), (cuando la justicia lo empezó a investigar, en 2013 Uribe se preguntó en su cuenta de Twitter: “¿Por qué soy paramilitar? ¿por haber sido amigo de Pedro Juan Moreno, del general Rito Alejo del Río, por haber promovido las Convivir -grupos paramilitares regulados por el Estado-, porque militaricé las Comuna 13 de Medellín, por haber permitido la masacre del Aro -paramilitares de las “Autodefensas” mataron 17 campesinos-), el fenómeno criminal se acentuó y el proceso de paz se disolvió.

Duque implementó una “suerte de desprecio” y de baja intensidad al Acuerdo: homologó el término “paz” al término “Farc”, instrumentalizó el Poder Judicial, evitó partidas presupuestarias en el Plan Nacional de Desarrollo, obstaculizó el avance de la Jurisdicción Especial para la Paz, criminalizó, bajo la etiqueta de “guerrilla”, cualquier protesta social. El resultado fue una mayor violencia. La ONU, desde el primer año de la implementación, alertó sobre la desaparición de una gran cantidad de los 7.100 excombatientes de las Farc que habían iniciado su reincorporación a la vida civil. Año a año se acumulan los asesinatos de líderes sociales, que generalmente reclaman tierras para los campesinos o denuncian deterioros en el medio ambiente. Y esto Sofía y Alejandro lo saben bien, porque antes que cafeteros, los jóvenes son biólogos que realizaban estudios de impacto ambiental. De hecho, se conocieron mientras cursaban Biología Vegetal en la universidad.
Durante toda la carrera fueron grandes amigos porque nadie se atrevía a dar el primer paso. Su entorno le decía a Sofía que Alejandro estaba enamorado de ella, pero él se mostraba impoluto. No sé sabe si era una curiosa estrategia de conquista, o bien la timidez de aquel que está a punto de entregar su corazón. Esto generaba confusión y ansiedad en Sofía, que mantenía a Alejandro en sus pensamientos. Hasta que un día, precisamente en el mes de septiembre cuando sus amigos se reunieron para festejar los cumpleaños de quienes nacieron en ese mes, Alejandro la besó. Pero ahora, Sofía era mano en la partida del amor, y utilizó la carta fuerte de la indiferencia. Así estuvieron jugando un tiempo hasta que se comprometieron. Pasaron por muchas etapas del noviazgo, y llegaron a trabajar juntos. Empresas consultoras los empezaron a contratar para que diseñen estudios de impacto ambiental en zonas que se pretendían intervenir mediante la explotación o la construcción de obras. Les fue muy bien. Aunque este último año el trabajo que realizaban cayó estrepitosamente. De un momento a otro, fueron citados sólo en dos oportunidades: para hacer un aprovechamiento sustentable forestal y para declarar una reserva como área protegida. Hoy prácticamente todos sus amigos biólogos están desempleados. De modo que decidieron incursionar en el café para vivir.
“Antes se pagaba muy bien, y ahora de repente se empezó a pagar mal. Se puso muy pesado el panorama; se estancó la economía pero, sobre todo, las consultoras ya no sacan tanta gente a campo porque están muy calientes esas zonas por los paramilitares”, me cuentan Sofía y Alejandro en la casa del bosque, cuatro días antes de que se realice la “Marcha por la vida”, convocada por el movimiento “Defendamos la paz” en todo el país, que surgió tras el asesinato de la líder María del Pilar Hurtado en Tierralta, Córdoba. El gran problema es, en el fondo, la distribución de las tierras de los campos colombianos.
“Siempre nos tocó estar en lugares calientes. Nuestros guías de campo tenían que ser gente de ahí, y muchos eran paramilitares o guerrilleros. Ellos te guían y te van diciendo que, por ejemplo, en este lugar no se puede entrar porque hay minas antipersona (explosivos), o que en este otro no se puede porque es de los paramilitares y nos pueden matar, aunque haya daño medioambiental”, afirma la pareja.
“Las zonas más pobres están en las fronteras, y muchas son manejadas por las Águilas Negras (grupo criminal de extrema derecha), que a su vez son financiadas por una parte de la clase política que se favorece con la violencia haciendo negocios, y políticamente para que los sigan votando a ellos al sostener que son quienes van a terminar con dicha violencia”, dice Alejandro, y toma un sorbo de su café.

“En el Acuerdo, que está escrito, dice que se tienen que repartir las tierras pero eso no sucedió. Y la violencia es con los paramilitares, que se quieren quedar con las tierras que dejaron los guerrilleros en el desarme. Los cabecillas de las Farc están metidos en los negocios, pero las bases son campesinos pobres y humildes que fueron reclutados de chicos y merecen sus derechos. Yo he tratado con muchos de ellos”, comenta Sofía mientras acaricia a su perra Abril, y concluye: “En definitiva, la economía está muy mal y así vamos ‘culo pal estanque’. Las zonas donde nosotros hacíamos el trabajo están muy peligrosas y cada vez menos se solicitan que alguien intervenga en esos lugares.”.
Por eso es que la victoria de Duque en agosto del 2018, el retorno del uribismo en Colombia y la nueva cara del paramilitarismo que se va construyendo sobre la marcha -a medida que un líder social más deja de respirar-, impulsaron a Sofía y a Alejandro a escribir en las hojas de la historia de este bosque encantador, una nueva aventura de amor cafetero, que acaba de empezar.
