Ahora, a dos meses de haberme asilado, cuando quiero respirar profundo, siento agujas en el pecho, fuertes pinchazos que no me dejan respirar bien”.

La repentina muerte de Agustín García -subsecretario de Seguridad Ciudadana- produjo un malestar generalizado. Para el gobierno y para la gente que conocía su vitalidad impresionó la rapidez con la que se produjo su partida. Mientras que el sector de la sociedad que no lo ubicaba, se impactó al ver el rostro joven que circuló en las redes sociales y en los portales digitales, con la corta edad de 37 años. Si bien García presentaba sobrepeso y en la internación le descubrieron diabetes, es una realidad que la franja etaria de contagios desciende a medida que la letalidad del virus aumenta con la existencia de nuevas cepas.

“Empecé a sentir picazón un lunes a la mañana. A la tarde sentía calor. Me dio positivo. Me mandaron al hotel y al día siguiente tenía 39 de fiebre. Tuve esa temperatura durante una semana, con muchísimo dolor de cuerpo y cabeza”.

El santarroseño de 38 años, cuyos testimonios se narran en estos párrafos, no presentaba ninguna comorbilidad (trastornos adicionales como obesidad, diabetes o hipertensión) al momento de haber contraído Covid, por el contrario, es un joven sano que practicaba rugby hacía 25 años, corría 20 kilómetros cada 7 días y concurría al gimnasio tres veces por semana, y hoy, a dos meses de haberse aislado, presenta graves secuelas (en este tipo de situaciones, las más frecuentes son fatiga, insomnio, arritmias, problemas respiratorios y neurológicos).

Es una realidad que la franja etaria de contagios desciende a medida que la letalidad del virus aumenta con la existencia de nuevas cepas

“La cabeza me explotaba. El dolor de espalda y cintura fue insoportable. Me costaba respirar. Al cuarto día empecé a tener tos. Empecé a no poder respirar, me asusté verdaderamente y tuve que llamar a los médicos”.

Sólo esta semana fallecieron en La Pampa ocho personas menores de 50 años (49, 46, 44, 43, 42, 39, 37 y 26 años). El ministro de Salud, Mario Kohan, lo había anticipado en declaraciones radiales. Dijo: “La mayoría de los contagiados tienen menos de 40 años. Estamos internando a personas más jóvenes, se registran cuadros más graves y estamos teniendo fallecimientos de personas más jóvenes”. En comunicación con Revista BIFE, el médico de terapia intensiva del Cear, Javier Tévez, reveló que actualmente el promedio de internados ronda los 55 años.

“Tuve miedo real. A la semana verdaderamente no podía respirar. El día que llamé a los médicos pensé que me moría. Me mandaban ibuprofeno pero empeoraba y pensé que no la contaba. La fiebre no me bajaba ni un punto. Ahí me empezaron a dar antibióticos y jarabes. No era que tosía un ratito y se me pasaba: era todo el tiempo, todos los días, sin un momento de descanso. 21 días con esa tos insoportable. Ahora a más de un mes, todavía tengo esa tos que me deja sin aire y te hace dolor el pecho, como si fuera una lija que no para. Y la cabeza también te duele, porque te retumba todo”.

Esta es la característica principal de la segunda ola. La primera se metió con la vejez, mientras que la segunda se ensaña con la juventud, “divino tesoro” en el que, no obstante, prevalece un sector que sale a buscar al virus, estimulado por una rebeldía que se manifiesta en hechos tan trasgresores como compartir el mate en la avenida San Martín u organizar juntadas clandestinas en campos de sus progenitores.

“Pensé que este bicho no me iba a hacer nada, porque soy deportista y siempre fui sano. Pero me hizo pelota. Me arruinó. Todavía sigo con la voz media cambiada y los pulmones que me pican todo el tiempo. Los 11 días en el hotel la pasé verdaderamente mal, y todavía me cuesta respirar profundo”.

Lo que empieza a suceder en La Pampa no es un hecho aislado, naturalmente. Ocurre en el país. Y empezó, podría decirse, en Brasil, donde en los hospitales hay cada vez más rostros sin arrugas y pelos sin canas. A partir de marzo la peste de la nueva cepa Manaos comenzó a descender por el país carioca, llegó a Argentina y hoy quizá ya esté circulando en La Pampa, como advirtió esta semana en conferencia de prensa el ministro Kohan (click). “Estamos viendo una prevalencia de pacientes jóvenes, son comorbilidades, internados con cuadros muy graves”, había dicho en marzo Jaques Sztafnok, médico de un hospital de San Pablo, casi un calco de lo que dijo esta semana Kohan.

En conversación con Revista BIFE, la directora de Epidemiología Ana Bertone, opinó sobre la causa del incremento de los casos en jóvenes: “Puede ser la frecuencia de enfermedad (es decir mayor cantidad de casos, mayor circulación viral), la campaña de vacunación en personas adultas mayores, y como otra opción podría decirse la circulación de variantes diferentes que deberá evaluarse si son de interés o de preocupación epidemiológica”.
