SAN MATEO Y EL RECUERDO CHAVISTA

En un pueblo pobre en el Estado de Aragua, una familia recuerda los mejores años del chavismo. Dos adolescentes, que perdieron un hijo, proyectan una vida con su recién nacido.

1. Llegamos a San Mateo.

Estábamos por llegar a San Mateo (Estado de Aragua, a una hora de Caracas). Nos desviamos por un camino ríspido, cada vez más engorroso.  Nos metimos por la falda de una montaña en forma de caracol y empezamos a subir como en una espiral hacia arriba. A medida que uno sube los cerros en Venezuela, la precariedad y peligrosidad es mayor. Nos detuvimos a 200 metros del tope, en el barrio (villa miseria en Argentina) Flores. 

El taxi me cobró un dineral. Le entregué los dólares sin chistar, pero sabiendo que era la primera y última vez que me iban a engrupir. Luego me enteré que una batería sale 70 dólares, el aceite es mucho más caro y los repuestos casi no se consiguen porque son importados. Dejó de ser rentable manejar un taxi.

En una esquina cuya calle estaba cubierta de matas y basura, doblamos a la derecha; y en mitad de la cuadra, un poco escondida, la casa donde me alojaré. El precario revoque de las paredes se estiran a lo largo de cinco metros que abarca la entrada, la cocina, y atravesando una puerta, otro pequeño sector que, luego de pasar por una hamaca paraguaya, conduce al baño. Si uno corre el velo de la cortina que lo oculta, puede observar un inodoro y un balde grande para asearse cuando se pretende realizar una actividad fuera del hogar.

2.La soga, Henry, María, el hijo perdido y la funeraria.

En el interior, entonces, dos habitaciones tapadas por una cortina. Una era la mía, compuesta por una cama, una soga que cuelga atada a un fierro del techo, cuya utilidad es a preferencia y gusto de cada uno, y más allá un depósito de cosas. La otra es integrada por dos adolescentes de 17 y 16 años y su hijo recién nacido. 

Henry y María habían perdido un hijo antes que naciera, de modo que este lo buscaron con intensidad. Henry tiene los ojos hundidos y aprieta fuerte la mano al saludar. María tiene las tetas llena de leche y una boca muy grande. La muchacha está terminado el colegio, y el muchacho estudia para ser contador y trabaja cuando lo llaman en una funeraria.

– ¿Qué trabajo te corresponde en la funeraria? 

– Soy quien se encarga de abrir y cortar a los muertos.

– ¿Te gusta?

– Sí.

– ¿Qué es lo que más te gusta?

– Lo que tienen adentro.

– ¿Por?

– No sé, me parece que soy muy curioso.

Henry es curioso. Me contó sobre geografía e historia de su país. Me habló de particularidades del ser venezolano y del ser sanmateano. Me dijo que pese a la pobreza son solidarios. Me habló del mango, la fruta que representa una salvación para su familia y para mucha otra gente que no consigue alimentos, “porque tiene todos los nutrientes, nace en todos lados y es riquísima; aunque ahora se termina la temporada”. El último mango de la mata de su patio donde sigue el cerro, me lo comí yo, la noche anterior a las 3 de la mañana, en un atracón nocturno, cuando me encontré subido a un árbol con un palo.

3.El recuerdo chavista

En otro sector de la casa, que no llega a ser una habitación, duerme el tío Osvaldo. Tiene dos dientes que sobresalen, es contador y trabaja para el Estado. En la familia hay un abogado, una médica generalista (la hermana, que trabaja en la posta del barrio), una contadora que vive en Argentina y manda productos y dinero (lo que hace funcionar la economía familiar), dos jubilados y un estudiante de contaduría. 

Es una familia preparada, formada y pobre. Son chavistas porque en “los mejores años” pudieron ingresar a la universidad. No olvidarán, me cuentan, cuando por primera vez hablaron de ellos por televisión, al anunciar “políticas concretas” para ese sector. Antes ni siquiera se sabía de su existencia, y con el chavismo fueron reconocidos por primera vez. Eso es algo que, me dicen, no olvidarán. A pesar de que trabajen todo el día y haya momentos en que no lleguen a cubrir los tres platos, a pesar de que el agua llegue solo una vez por semana, la electricidad se corte la mitad del día, las medicinas no lleguen a la posta sanitaria o las CLAP (cajas de alimentos regulados y distribuidos por el Estado) lleguen con los productos menguados porque se los roban; serán chavistas.
