Mientras los profesores duermen el tranquilo sueño de la corrección política, anestesiados de aplaudir lo diferente, Mina Harker nos presta sus ojos para ver el mundo desde adentro, en esta realidad donde nada es lo que parece, especialmente lo consagrado por el tristemente célebre sentido común.

Un equívoco menor, dentro de los muchos y peligrosísimos cometidos por los profesores universitarios, concierne al tristemente célebre Julio Cortázar. Se trata de una anécdota repetida y malinterpretada hasta al hartazgo, cuya consecuencia inmediata es la siempre apresurada fascinación de los neófitos y la vanidad de los susodichos simuladores de talento.

Según estos, Cortázar fue invitado por un taller de escritores (una comisión vecinal, imagino yo) a participar de un ciclo de lecturas en un pueblo del interior. Cortázar no era el único, otras figuras igualmente menores de la literatura lo acompañaban. Se les pidió elegir un cuento de su agrado para ser leído con histrionismo y verborragia frente a un público compuesto principalmente de campesinos.

Luego de cuatro o cinco cuentos, la audiencia estaba más aburrida que Borges mirando un partido de fútbol: los escritores habían optado por textos rurales, llenos de vacas, tractores y soja con la intención de asombrar al diablo con maldades. Entonces fue el turno de Cortázar, que leyó un cuento de Edgar Allan Poe. Al finalizar, el público se encontraba en éxtasis.

Acá viene la ingenua interpretación de los profesores. Ellos explican que es lo diferente lo que maravilla a la audiencia, como si lo distinto pudiera ser interesante per se. La correcta interpretación de la anécdota es esta: los gauchos no alucinan porque el cuento de Poe no se parece a su cotidianeidad, sino porque Poe es Poe y su literatura es excelente. Es la calidad de un texto lo que nos conduce a esferas superiores, sea una calidad marginal o hegemónica.

Ahora penetremos en el origen de semejante desacierto. Sucede que la gente (naturalmente los profesores universitarios pertenecen a esta categoría) se autoirradia constantemente con ligeras teorías sobre lo diferente para satisfacer su conciencia moral y termina por confundir las aptitudes literarias de un genio con las injusticias de nuestra sociedad. La escasez de cobre, habitar el cuerpo equivocado y pertenecer a una cultura con limitada membresía -circunstancias que excluyen a un sujeto de la norma social y lo hacen diferente- pueden ser razones suficientes para protestar y demandar una transformación política, pero no para exigir reconocimiento artístico.

No me cabe la menor duda de que la gente es alentada por sentimientos muy nobles, pero el problema de que existan personas sin acceso a los servicios básicos y a ciertos derechos humanos inalienables no se va a solucionar encumbrando la palabra “diferente”, como han intentado hacer los profesores universitarios endilgándosela a Poe para justificar el éxtasis que su texto produjo en la audiencia. Semejante metodología no solo resulta estéril a la hora de apoyar a los desplazados, sino que además ignora el poder emancipador de las grandes piezas de la literatura. Por eso, y de la misma manera que hemos luchado por separar la obra de un autor de su biografía para poder leer y disfrutar a Vargas Llosa, Heidegger y Giovani Papini sin macular nuestros remilgos políticos, es importante avocar la inteligencia a discernir los textos de calidad de los intrascendentes, en lugar de satisfacer el narcisismo moral con fabulosas imaginaciones sobre lo diferente.

Semejante metodología no solo resulta estéril a la hora de apoyar a los desplazados, sino que además ignora el poder emancipador de las grandes piezas de la literatura.

Otra cansada historia que repiten los profesores es la de Piglia que, al observar que sus estudiantes insistían en leer solamente a sus contemporáneos, dijo: “Esta muy bien que los lean, pero ¿ya leyeron el Facundo?”. Bueno, yo les digo lo siguiente: está muy bien que lean a los diferentes, pero ¿ya leyeron a Proust?
