Metáforas y Coronavirus: crónica desde Milán

Viola narra cómo se fueron sucediendo los hechos desde la llegada del COVID19. Un paralelismo entre la vida anterior y la actual. Entre la desconfianza y la certeza, desde la segunda ciudad más infectada, la cronista afirma: “Salvar la humanidad quedándonos quietos. Mandando a la ruina el capital, probablemente. Y lo hacemos. La idea de la muerte cercana es muy persuasiva”.

Hay metáforas tan trilladas que ya no surten más efecto; hasta que un día suceden. Eso pasó éste lunes en Milán con la abusada «un silencio ensordecedor». El silencio empezó a tomar las calles hace tres semanas, cuando cerraron las escuelas y los decretos hacían marcha y retro-marcha hasta cerrar definitivamente todas las manifestaciones culturales y casi todas las actividades deportivas. Los cómicos graban los programas sin público, sin saber si sus ocurrencias surten efecto. Los jugadores de fútbol disputaban partidos importantes sin mas hinchada que los que están en el banco, en completo silencio, y cuando hacen un gol deberían exultar sin abrazarse. No se entiende por qué debían que jugar. Si era un trabajo debían estar exentos, si era por pasión faltaban todos los elementos.

Mi barrio ya no se despierta a las 4 de la mañana cuando pasaba la barredora  y detrás de ella una cascada de ruidos: el primer tranvía, la recolección del vidrio con un río de botellas estrellándose contra las chapas del camión, los mirlos, los primeros autos, las puertas de los vecinos, el ascensor que sube y baja llevando chicos a la escuela, los grandes al trabajo, todo envuelto por el olor a café del bar que se trepaba por las ventanas. Todo eso es un recuerdo y en su lugar en la calle, todos los días y todo el día, hay inmovilidad y un extraño silencio.

No solo en Milán y otras provincias del norte, desde el lunes pasado toda la Italia se queda en casa. Lo piden por todos los medios hasta los que eran o éramos más incrédulos, o más optimistas, o menos apocalípticos, los confundidos por medidas poco claras, por sospechas basadas en la falta de confianza.

Milán, marzo 2020

¿Por qué ahora todos creemos? Porque los hospitales no dan a basto. Porque hoy la realidad habla claro y los médicos y el personal sanitario están combatiendo ésta guerra generada por un bacilo invisible. No hay enemigo más aterrador que el que no se ve. Es verdad, la mayor parte lo pasa como una gripe, pero el porcentaje restante de infectados, que sufre complicaciones respiratorias y necesita terapia intensiva, llenó todas las camas. El contagio se frena solo si nosotros lo frenamos quedándonos en casa. Salvar la humanidad quedándonos quietos. Mandando a la ruina el capital, probablemente. Y lo hacemos. La idea de la muerte cercana es muy persuasiva.

Fuimos el primer país en emergencia después de China. Me pregunto qué necesitan los otros, ustedes mismos, para no minimizar y ver cómo son las cosas, y tomar los debidos recaudos.

Adaptándonos a la rutina nueva, a la convivencia continua y forzada. Tratando de que nuestros hijos estén bien, que no teman.

Hoy en el primer mundo – bastante mimado en relación a la Argentina, pero quizás se lo merezca después de haber resucitado a dos guerras mundiales – nos toca convivir con la incertidumbre. Que siempre está, nos constituye, nacemos con un sello de vencimiento en la frente del cual no sabemos la fecha, pero que siempre está, y en éstas ocasiones se hace tangible. Y de golpe los que estaban medios dormidos, perdidos en ficciones, se dan cuenta de que quieren vivir, que están locos de ganas de continuar a respirar.

Sectores vinculados al arte, espectáculo y turismo están ya de rodillas, los demás están limpiando el banquillo y se disponen a acomodarse de igual manera. Pero todos los que podemos estamos igualmente en casa. Adaptándonos a la rutina nueva, a la convivencia continua y forzada. Tratando de que nuestros hijos estén bien, que no teman. Tratamos los padres masticando la propia ansiedad para asimilarla y transformarla en algo mejor, trata la escuela dando clases online. Para instruir, sí, pero sobre todo para estar y acompañar. Luchando entre las ideas románticas que nos proponen del estar siempre en familia, y la realidad. Algunos domando el miedo con fatalismo, otros con fe, con creatividad. Cada uno como puede, pero pocos perseveran en desestimar la situación. Las evidencias ya no lo permiten.

El silencio será parte de nuestras calles en Italia al menos hasta el 3 de abril, y seguramente también mucho después. No sé cómo y si nos reprenderemos económicamente, seguro sería mejor que hubiera sucedido, pero es esto es lo que nos toca vivir. Y a la tardecita, cuando somos más frágiles y el corazón se acelera y se llena de miedo, es bueno escuchar las historias de los jóvenes, que sonríen y se sienten eternos. Y lo son, todos lo fuimos.

Las cosas no eran tan claras hasta hace unos días, cuando nos movíamos con libertad y esperanza, condimentada con una pizca de negación, que a veces genera remordimientos. De frente a los remordimientos pienso como Serrat una metáfora menos trillada y más hermosa, «que por fría que fuera mi noche triste, no eché al fuego ni uno solo de los besos que me diste». El fuego quema igual. Una vela ilumina la esperanza en otra noche silenciosa.
