Lou amaba las putas, los caballos, el whisky. No ganaba mucho –nadie ganaba mucho en la fábrica- pero gastaba la mitad de su sueldo en apuestas. Con el resto, sobrevivía. Aquella mañana fue el último en subir al bus. Bromeaba con Andy y durante un instante se detuvo junto al chofer y miró los asientos ocupados y los vacíos. Llevaba dos mochilas al hombro. Dio un par de pasos y se sentó a mi lado. Andy buscó asiento libre en la parte de atrás.

La semana anterior, el Manchester había perdido uno a cero en el partido de ida contra el Barcelona y esa noche tenía que ganar si no quería quedar fuera de la Champion’s. Lou, Andy y yo éramos fanáticos del Manchester.
A mitad de camino, en medio de un embotellamiento, Lou miró por la ventanilla y por sobre los bocinazos de la calle, dijo: “Apuesto que esta noche, el Barcelona se lo coge de parado al Manchester”. Después, se volvió hacía mí y una sonrisa de Buda -o de Mona Lisa- le cruzó la cara. No alcancé a preguntarle qué mierda le pasaba. Él, con una armonía de movimientos que no le conocía, tiró de un cordón rojo que sobresalía de una de las mochilas. De lo que vino después, sabrán por los diarios y la tv. Una luz cegadora envolvió al bus. La luz hervía y nosotros hervimos con la luz en un módico big bang. Sentimos el vértigo de la piel disolviéndose, el ruido a huesos rotos, los vidrios en astillas y el inconfundible olor a mierda que queda en el aire cuando las tripas se vuelven esquirlas.

El bus que todos los días nos devolvía de la fábrica al centro de Londres, se detuvo en el cielo un instante después. Fue un frenazo en seco. El chofer ahogó el motor y el aire aún olía a quemado. En el bus nos miramos desconcertados, un poco incómodos.
Sin perder su sonrisa de Mona Lisa, Lou se levantó de su asiento -solo una mochila colgaba de su hombro-, fue hasta la puerta de descenso y con la misma delicadeza con que había tirado del cordón rojo, giró las perillas de las salidas de emergencia. Fue una gentileza de su parte, o una sobreactuación. Nosotros estábamos ilesos, aunque quizás un poco pálidos, con un ligero zumbido en los oídos y las bocas resecas. El bus estaba intacto.
Las puertas se destrabaron con un chasquido que persistió algunos segundos. Lou les dio un ligero empujón y cedieron.
El chofer del bus dejó de insistir con el arranque, busco nuestras miradas en el espejo retrovisor y, a mitad de camino entre lo que se afirma y se indaga, dijo: “Algo explotó…”.
Lou miró al chofer. Nos miró a nosotros. Sin decir palabra bajó la escalinata de la puerta de descenso. Nosotros, en fila, lo seguimos.
En el cordón de la vereda, 72 vírgenes esperaban a Lou. No todas eran bellas ni jóvenes. A algunas le faltaban dientes, casi todas estaban un poco excedidas de peso y a otras, una sombra de vello les oscurecía el mentón. Pero iban enfundadas en tenues gasas de colores. Y estaban desnudas bajo las gasas.
Lou las miró con lascivia y devoción, como quien llega al final de un espinoso camino. O de un calvario. Creo que por un instante no supo qué era lo que debía hacer. Entonces, una de las vírgenes -la menos joven- dio un paso hacia él y lo tomó de la mano. Lou apoyó en el suelo la mochila que colgaba de su hombro. Y se dejó llevar.
La casa de las vírgenes no era ni alta ni baja y sobre las paredes pintadas a la cal, con aerosoles fluo, alguien había escrito graffitis obscenos. Una puerta azul y un jardincito de siemprevivas, que se habían secado, coronaban el frente. Lou iba por la mitad del jardín cuando se detuvo un momentos y nos miró. “Nada personal”, dijo mientras nos recorría con la mirada y la sonrisa de Mona Lisa se le evaporaba del rostro. Después saludó con la mano y cruzó el umbral. De a una, las vírgenes lo siguieron. La última de ellas cerró con llave la puerta azul. Los gemidos comenzaron un instante después.

En el cordón de la vereda, junto al bus, nos miramos. Estábamos en un cielo ajeno, sin saber qué hacer y con la eternidad por delante. Nos dispersamos en silencio. Creo que, íntimamente, nos sentimos avergonzados por algo que no podíamos precisar.
A la vuelta de la casa de las vírgenes, había un pub. Andy y yo entramos. Pedimos una cerveza. En la pantalla de un televisor pequeño, mal abulonado a una pared descascarada, el Manchester perdía 3 a 0, jugaba mal y estaba a cinco minutos de quedar fuera de la Champion’s. Andy pidió un whisky. Yo me levanté y fui al baño. La eliminación del Manchester o la cerveza en mi estómago vacío, me habían mareado un poco. Empujé la puerta con el hombro.

Al final de la hilera de mingitorios, contra una pared rojiza, un tipo se cogía a otro, de parado. Por un instante, sus miradas se cruzaron con la mía. Una sonrisa como de Mona Lisa cruzó la cara de los dos. Yo bajé la mirada y ellos volvieron a apretarse contra la pared. Oriné con la vista fija en los azulejos sucios. Durante un instante intenté asociar con rostros familiares las manchas de mugre en la pared, y si bien al principio no vi más que manchas en las manchas, de a poco, a medida que el goce de los tipos se volvía un gemido intenso, las formas de los azulejos fueron adquiriendo el trazo de rostros vagamente conocidos. Rostros que reían en un sitio confuso y azulado. El cielo, quizás.
