Qué se conoce sobre la cepa de Manaos que ya ingresó al país

La cepa amazónica del coronavirus, también conocida como variante P.1 o Manaos, preocupa a la región. Según un estudio realizado en conjunto entre la Universidad de San Pablo (USP) y de la Universidad de Oxford, Reino Unido, la cepa del Amazonas tiene capacidad de reinfectar a quienes ya fueron víctimas de Covid-19 y tiene un poder de contagio dos veces superior a la cepa original.

Investigadores del Centro Brasil-Reino Unido para el Descubrimiento, Diagnóstico, Genómica y Epidemiología de Arbovirus (Cadde) detallaron que la variante P.1. es entre 1,4 y 2,2 veces más transmisible que las cepas que lo precedieron, según explicó un comunicado de la Fundación del Amparo a la Pesquisa del Estado de San Pablo.

Los científicos estimaron, además, que entre el 25% y el 61% de las personas que ya están infectadas con el SARS-CoV-2, la nueva variante de Manaos puede eludir el sistema inmunológico y causar una nueva infección.

Manaos colapsó a mediados de enero por un brote inédito que provocó la falta de oxígeno. 

“En solo siete semanas, P.1. se convirtió en la cepa más prevalente de SARS-CoV-2 en la región”, destacó el comunicado de la Fundación de Ayuda a la Pesquisa del estado de San Pablo.

En paralelo, se sifundió otro estudio que aún debe ser revisado por pares científicos y que hace referencia a la vacuna china CoronaVac que aplica Brasil junto con la de AstraZeneca. “Los resultados sugieren que la P1 puede escapar de anticuerpos neutralizantes inducidos por una vacuna de virus inactivo” como la CoronaVac..

Este trabajo fue divulgado en la página pre-prints (antes de revisión) del portal The Lancet por científicos de la USP y de la UNICAMP, y se basa en apenas ocho casos.

El Gobierno nacional indicó este lunes que ya existe circulación comunitaria de cuatro variantes del COVID-19 en Argentina, entre ellas la cepa Manaos. 

Al menos, tres casos fueron detectados en CABA. Según el Consorcio que hizo la investigación, dos de los casos presentan nexo epidemiológico entre sí (contacto estrecho). Ningún caso tiene antecedente de viaje al exterior ni contacto estrecho con viajero, por lo que corresponderían a casos de origen desconocido.

En Córdoba se detectaron seis casos de la variante Manaos, de los cuales uno presentó antecedente de viaje y los cinco restantes son contactos estrechos de este.
