Pensamos que por la pandemia no se iba a juntar tantas personas. Me impresionó la enorme congoja de la gente el día de su entierro.– dice Susana Silvestro, en la punta de la mesa, frente a sus dos hijos Marcelo y Juan Pablo de la Torre.
Estamos en la casa donde vivió y trabajó Mario De la Torre hasta sus últimos días, en la calle Loro barranquero, a un mes de su fallecimiento. Mario, el diácono de los pobres. Artífice de una ambiciosa empresa solidaria, dejó un hondo pesar en la sociedad pampeana, como pocas veces sucede. Por fortuna, fue reconocido en vida. Nacido en Lincoln en 1951, entre otras obras fue el precursor y la cara más visible de los famosos Hogares Don Bosco, donde chicos con inconvenientes encontraban una familia. “Salvando aunque sea a un chico, estamos salvando a una generación”, decía. De la Torre estaba convencido de que las personas son “buenas”, solo hay que formarlas; empoderarlas. Llegaron a tener la crianza y educación de más de 100 niños y hombres durante 25 años, un cuarto de siglo. Después dejaron los Hogares y emprendieron (en 2014) la Fundación “Aportes a la Humanidad”, que se encarga de alimentar y capacitar a los más necesitados. En una época ciega, caracterizada por hablar a través de las orejas, De la Torre hacía hincapié en la “capacidad de escucha” y en el “poder de la observación”. Lo de Mario era llevar la empatía al extremo: “Siempre hay que pensar que el otro pude haber sido yo”.

Quizá nada de lo que fue Mario ni de lo que es hoy en la memoria de quienes lo conocieron pudo haber sido si no se hubiese ido a vivir al lado de la casa de la tía de Susana Silvestro, por el año 68. Ahí se conocieron, durante el entusiasmo adolescente. Él tenía 16, ella 15. Forjaron una amistad, pero no fue hasta después del servicio militar, con 23 y 22 años respectivamente, que se pusieron de novios. En el 76 se casaron, y crearon una alianza amorosa y humanitaria. La vida de ambos fue un reflejo de lo que vivieron en su niñez, porque nacieron en casas cuyos padres acostumbraban ayudar al resto (“Si alguien venía con una rifa, mi papá decía que no se iba sin comprársela; mis suegros eran igual”, recuerda Susana, con media sonrisa). Ninguno rompió el mandato familiar, sino que lo exacerbaron: llevaron la solidaridad a extremos físicos y espiritualmente extraordinarios.
– A Mario le brotaba esa cosa… por ahí le decía “ay Mario no podés parar un poco, ¿no estás cansado, querido?”. Y me decía: “Sí, pero no te preocupes, el de arriba nos va a dar una mano”.
Si Mario era el brazo político, Susana fue el brazo ejecutor de las obras humanitarias. Alguien se tenía que hacer cargo de la casa, de los detalles que quizá no se ven porque pasan desapercibidos con la vorágine de los días. Obrera de la solidaridad, poseedora de una “fe inquebrantable” y de una prepotencia de trabajo notable, Susana construyó siempre a la par de Mario, y Mario a la par de Susana. Lo que caracterizó al matrimonio fue la constancia. Seguir a pesar de todo.
–Yo era la que me quedaba. La que hacía. La que preparaba las cosas. Lo que ocurre es que trabajábamos muy juntos, entonces no hubo una diferenciación tan marcada de las tareas. Él sí, más que nada, hacía lo público. Las relaciones sociales. Entonces si estábamos en el Hogar, me encargaba más que nada de llevar adelante la casa. Él se encargaba de la otra parte, lo público, la cuestión de la salud, de la escuela. Pero bueno, antes alguien tenía que estar en los hogares, porque había chicos que necesitaban de ciertas atenciones… así que ahí estaba yo.
Crearon una alianza amorosa y humanitaria. La vida de ambos fue un reflejo de lo que vivieron en su niñez, porque nacieron en casas cuyos padres acostumbraban ayudar al resto”
–¿Cómo manejaban el desaliento?
Desalientos hubo, no te digo que no. Pero, no obstante, la gente también nos ayudó a no abandonar. Éramos conscientes de la necesidad que había. Verdaderamente… nos quedábamos más que nada por los chicos. Los chicos que no tenían un seguimiento. Hubo chicos que fueron excelentes y hoy en día son excelentes personas. Todo se puede recuperar. Pero tiene que haber una constancia.
–¿Qué es lo más difícil de todo?
Hacerse responsable, comprometerse… es una tarea muy difícil. Comprometerse por el otro, pero comprometerse verdaderamente. Hoy el compromiso y el amor al prójimo son tan importante…
Por ejemplo el tema de los planes sociales…Hubo gente que supo aprovecharlos hasta que consiguieron su trabajo; pero lamentablemente son los menos. Nosotros enseñábamos carpintería, enseñábamos a coser, a cocinar. Pero no para que no nos falte en el invierno, sino para que los chicos nos vean y aprendan, entonces se iban enganchando, y así se acostumbraban a trabajar.
Mario y Susana tuvieron dos hijos: Marcelo y Juan Pablo. Ellos se criaron, primero, viendo como se materializaba la idea del Hogar y, después, viviendo ahí. Las desigualdades, injusticias o tragedias familiares de otros eran moneda corriente en sus vidas, por eso lo consideraban algo “normal”. Además, de alguna manera veían a sus padres como si fueran algo parecido a superhéroes, porque ante cada situación compleja, sabían que ellos la iban a resolver. Como dice Marcelo:
–Veíamos chicos que no tenían familia, que estaban dando vuelta en hogares… eso que es trágico, nosotros lo adoptábamos como algo que papá y mamá iban a solucionar.
O como dice Juan Pablo:
-Para nosotros era todo un juego estar en el Hogar con todos los chicos. Para ese entonces Hernán y Carlos ya habían venido a vivir a casa. Después de ahí nos fuimos al Hogar.

-Más de grandes… ¿no hubo cuestionamientos o incomodidad por querer un poco de privacidad?
Juan Pablo: Y no, nosotros nos criamos así. Hoy sigue siendo igual. Cuando nos vamos de vacaciones, nos vamos todos. Somos más de 20. Es más, invitamos a más gente.
-¿Cómo se llevan con el tema de la fe?
Marcelo: Hemos sido criados en la fe católica. Tenemos mucho de eso. No tenemos la práctica de papá.
-¿Cómo era su padre, alguna vez lo vieron mal?
Marcelo: Por ahí no iba a decir si estaba mal. Ni siquiera en el último tiempo dijo que estaba mal. Vos lo veías mal a Mario, en el transitar de su vida, a lo último, por ahí con cosas que tienen que ver con lo físico. Pero espiritualmente papá nunca estuvo mal.
(Interviene Susana y dice: “no… nunca”).
(Retoma Marcelo)
-Nunca estuvo mal, al contrario. La última etapa que tuvo que ver con el Diaconado, como que se inyectó otra forma de ser diferente, en el sentido de que fue un impulso para seguir trabajando. Para llegar de otra forma… entonces sí había tenido su cambio. Se lo notó mucho más alegre.
Juan Pablo: Por ahí siempre lo agarrábamos un poco cansado de todas sus actividades, que es lo que charlábamos. Si uno se pone a pensar todo lo que hacía, la verdad que estaba fenomenal. Nunca demostró un enojo, nada. Se lo guardaría, porque a nosotros nada.
Susana: Lo que pasa es que, nosotros como padres responsables, tratábamos de que estén bien con todas sus cosas como a cualquier chico. A la par de ellos, también le fuimos dando oportunidades a otros chicos… eso hicimos nada más…
La última etapa que tuvo que ver con el Diaconado, como que se inyectó otra forma de ser diferente. Se lo notó mucho más alegre”
-¿Qué cosas le indignaban a Mario?
Marcelo: Papá nunca se quejó, siempre trabajó. Era parte de la revolución que hacía. El trabajo de papá iba en contra de todo lo que él consideraba que estaba mal. Esa era la revolución. Nunca se sentó a denunciar por denunciar, sino que siempre trabajó.
Susana: Para cambiar conductas, para cambiar las historias de muchos chicos.
Marcelo: Si después la indignación era con los chicos, con el sistema… no lo manifestaba.
-¿Y a usted Susana, qué le indigna?
Susana: Nosotros tratábamos de cambiarle la historia a los chicos, nada más. Tratábamos de hacerles ver lo que era normal. Un chico una vez me dijo “no me puedo acostumbrar a vivir como se debe vivir”… el hábito normal era tener una familia y las necesidades básicas satisfechas.
El trabajo de papá iba en contra de todo lo que él consideraba que estaba mal. Esa era la revolución. Nunca se sentó a denunciar por denunciar”
-¿Lograron cambiarle la historia a muchos chicos?
Susana: Muchísimos. Nos enfocábamos en la familia. El 90 por ciento consiguieron trabajo, familia… eran chicos que empezaban a ir a la escuela todos los días, se bañaban todos los días, comían todos los días… lo normal…
-¿Cómo era el acompañamiento de la sociedad?
Marcelo: Todo el mundo conocía la obra de Mario, entonces mucha gente ayudaba. Todo el mundo quería ser amigo de Mario también… la aceptación de la sociedad siempre fue buena. Sobre todo el Hogar. La fundación ya era Mario De la Torre.
-Si mira para atrás, Susana, ¿cómo recuerda toda la obra?
Contenta. Hicimos mucho. La alegrías me tapan los malos momentos. Lindo el agradecimiento… hay chicos que los tenemos bien presentes, y otros que los guardamos en los recuerdos.
–Y a Mario, ¿cómo lo recuerda?
Siempre predispuesto, nunca decía que no. “A esta hora vas a salir”, le decía. “Sisi pero ya vuelvo”, me respondía. Nunca había un no. Por eso es imposible imitarlo en su totalidad. Seguimos con la Fundación pero en la medida que podemos, con nuestros límites. El teléfono de Mario duraba 24 horas. “Por qué no lo apagas así dormís tranquilo”, le decía. Siempre tenía una excusa, pero nunca apagó el teléfono. Los mensajes y las llamadas siempre fueron continuas.
-¿Ustedes como lo recuerdan?
Hijos: Tener un padre como tuvimos es un lujo. Ahora que pasa el tiempo y que uno tiene la edad que él tuvo, miro para atrás y es increíble la obra que hizo. El esfuerzo que hizo y la voluntad fueron impresionantes.
