La vacuna contra el coronavirus que está desarrollando la Universidad de Oxford provoca una “fuerte respuesta inmune” tanto entre los adultos mayores, el grupo más vulnerable a la enfermedad, como en los jóvenes, afirmaron hoy fuentes del laboratorio británico AstraZeneca en Londres.

El gigante farmacéutico no proporcionó detalles de los datos detrás de la declaración y tampoco informó sobre cuándo publicaría los datos del ensayo de fase final, que mostrarían si la vacuna funciona en ensayos a gran escala.

“Es alentador ver que las respuestas inmunitarias fueron similares entre los adultos mayores y los jóvenes y que la reactogenicidad fue menor en los adultos mayores, donde la gravedad de la enfermedad de la Covid-19 es mayor”, subrayó un portavoz en un comunicado a los medios.

Explicó que los resultados demuestran aún más pruebas de la seguridad e inmunidad de la AZD1222, el nombre técnico de la vacuna.

El descubrimiento da esperanza a los investigadores a buscar pruebas de que evitará que las personas en el futuro padezcan enfermedades graves o la muerte por el virus.

“Son datos que muestran que la vacuna genera una buena inmunidad, medida en el laboratorio, en el grupo de edad mayor de 55 años, y eso también incluye buenas respuestas en las personas que son incluso mayores que eso, creo que es una señal prometedora”, señaló más temprano al diario Financial Times Jonathan Ball, profesor de virología en la Universidad de Nottingham.

Sin embargo, advirtió lo que es crucial es saber si la vacuna protege contra enfermedades graves, y eso solo se sabrá a partir de los ensayos de fase tres.

En otro orden, el diario Daily Mail reveló que los hospitales públicos del Reino Unido ya se están preparando para vacunar al personal sanitario contra el coronavirus a principios de diciembre.

Ese medio tuvo acceso a un correo electrónico interno, enviado por un jefe de una unidad especializada del NHS (como se le llama al servicio público de salud en el Reino Unido) a su personal, donde les informa que están preparando un programa nacional de vacunación para antes de Navidad.

El diario también consignó que el Gobierno británico introdujo nuevas leyes que permitirían al Reino Unido eludir el proceso de aprobación de la Unión Europea (UE) de la vacuna si está lista antes del final del período de transición posterior al Brexit el 31 de diciembre.

Esto aumenta el optimismo de que pronto al primer ministro Boris Johnson pueda relajar las restricciones sociales que tiene paralizado al país desde marzo.

“Se ha informado a nuestra unidad, junto con las organizaciones del NHS a nivel nacional, de que está preparado para iniciar un programa de vacunas contra el coronavirus para el personal a principios de diciembre”, escribió en un memorándum, Glen Burley, director ejecutivo de George Eliot Hospital NHS Trust en Warwickshire, centro de Inglaterra.

En ese sentido, el ministro de Salud Hancock le dijo al programa Today de BBC Radio 4 que el programa de vacunas estaba “progresando bien”.

Cuando se le preguntó cuando se podría vacunar al personal del NHS, dijo “todavía no hemos llegado allí. El programa de vacunas está progresando bien”.

Opinó que la mayor parte del despliegue de vacunación será para mediados del próximo año, pero ante la pregunta de los medios si se podía comenzar antes de fin de año, el ministro no lo descartó.
