La rumba en Venezuela

El cronista viajó a Venezuela y retrató la realidad del país caribeño desde diferentes ángulos. Hoy, el espíritu fiestero del venezolano: baile, tragos y cortejos se entremezclan en la noche bolivariana. Las últimas entregas de Cangrejo en Retirada.

Si bien el agravamiento de la crisis en Venezuela -como se sabe- ha golpeado fuertemente el bolsillo de las personas hasta el punto de que la actividad fundamental del día para gran parte de la población sea conseguir los alimentos; la noche, con sus encantos y misterios, no ha bajado de intensidad en cuanto a música, baile y, por supuesto, tragos: la rumba, como se dice acá.

Después de una jornada de caminata, recorrido, encuentros, conversaciones, historias trágicas e historias de “rebusques”, uno se toma un tiempo para deambular solo por la calle y se sorprende al ver las licorerías atestadas de gente. Pibas que bailan afuera de su auto de donde suena una música rumbera, pibes que compran cervezas y ron y whisky, algunos embriagados, otros no tanto, pero casi todos con una trago en la mano.

¿Cómo es posible, si el sueldo mínimo alcanza, por lo menos, para obtener los alimentos durante una sola semana? Es cierto, pero como el venezolano ha forjado su creatividad para resolver diariamente con la comida, también lo ha hecho, con todo el derecho del mundo, para que cada viernes y sábado pueda tomarse unas dignas “curdas”. 

Esto no solo sucede en los sectores que pueden denominarse de “clase media”. Si uno recorre los barrios, en la superficie o en los cerros, durante un fin de semana, podrá observar al costado de las calles, sillas, mesas, mesas de dominó, parlantes, tambores, y sobre cada uno de estos, los merecidos tragos, entre cantos y bailes.  

Me tocó vivenciar un velorio en un barrio. Estaba caminando junto a otras personas alrededor de las 10 de la noche y me dijeron “mirá, ahí están velando a alguien”. “Ajá” fue mi respuesta, pensando que nada de extraordinario tiene la muerte de una persona.

Pero cuando nos arrimamos, grande fue mi sorpresa al ver a mi costado individuos que bebían cerveza, más allá otros que tomaban ron, más acá, a unos pocos metros, el muerto, duro como el teclado que estoy presionando, y en el fondo, unas señoras de pollera que sacaban un parlante de una casa y que lo encendían: la gente empezó a bailar salsa, la música favorito del difunto. 

Al venezolano le gusta la rumba, le gusta disfrutar, no hay crisis que impida esto, y si usted no sabe bailar, puede ir armando sus valijas porque estará frito en este país caribeño. A mí nadie me lo contó, viví en carne propia el desplante por tener dos piernas izquierdas y una cintura de madera. Acá hasta el tipo con la mismísima cara de un perfecto “pendejo” baila como un virtuoso. Y bailan en todo momento. Apenas llegué a Caracas, pasé por una peluquería a las 7 p.m. y estaban sacudiendo el pescuezo al ritmo del merengue con cervezas en los mostradores. Cuando estuve en la costa, en Cuyagua, más allá de la fiesta nocturna, un albañil durante el día rasqueteaba un poco la pared y otro poco bailaba. Fíjese usted, qué tierno era ver a ese viejito barbudo, con uno vaya a saber qué historia detrás de esa piel curtida, intercalar el trabajo con un sensual movimiento de pelvis. ¿De dónde sacan tanta alegría, tanto ímpetu para vivir?

Pero más allá del desplante, que en realidad fueron meros gestos de extrañeza y alguna que otra risa burlona, vivencié al mismo tiempo la más bella solidaridad de estas personas que se esforzaron por incluirme en sus costumbres. Ocurrió lo siguiente:

Era la fiesta tradicional de San Juan, en Cuyagua (celebración típica de las costas de Aragua que se contará en otra crónica). Yo estaba solo, parado, mirando la euforia de todo el mundo a mi alrededor. Se estaba desarrollando el baile del tambor, seguramente lo más “candela” de Venezuela. Quise inmiscuirme entre el gentío bailando cumbia villera, y rápidamente el artesano del pueblo, un hombre divino que está loco o se hace el loco porque es bien lúcido, me puso un trago de Ron en la mano, su acompañante me puso un cigarro en la otra (son caros y escasean), y apareció una morenísima muchacha que me dijo “vente mi’ijo”. 

Tuve que dejar mi cigarro y mi trago a un lado. Una de atrás me hacía mover la cintura, otra de adelante intervenía en mis hombros, en simultáneo me hacían beber y fumar, y alrededor se formaba una ronda que aplaudía y se sumaba. Ya era parte de la manada. 

La noche, que resuelve los misterios que el día no puede, se presta para el cortejo. Acá se corteja y mucho. Los hombres, algunos más torpes que otros, habitualmente encaran; pero las mujeres son hábiles sirenas en el arte de la insinuación, tanto verbal como no verbal. En mis respetables recorridas nocturnas, no observé ningún tabú al respecto, sino más bien todo lo contrario: una suave tensión sexual mayormente impulsada por mujeres, que eligen con quién mover la cadera, cuando hacer una mirada o un gesto llamativo.

En la charla formal, en la blableta descarada, abundan los dobles sentidos. Siempre hay un camino que se bifurca y uno tiene que elegir entre seguir la vía del buen pastor o la pista que te conduzca a morder la manzana. 

En términos reales, concretos, la cosa parece ser un poco más complicada. Acá aparece una gran contradicción. La sociedad venezolana es conservadora, es mayormente religiosa, una gran porción aspira a casarse, uno se pone de joven en pareja y a seguir el mandato, hay muchos embarazos no deseados pero tantos otros buscados en adolescentes. ¿Cuánta gente sorprendida me ha dicho “27 años y no estás casado ni tienes hijos? Perdí la cuenta. 

Otra de adelante intervenía en mis hombros, en simultáneo me hacían beber y fumar, y alrededor se formaba una ronda que aplaudía y se sumaba. Ya era parte de la manada”

Pero sobre todo, la mayor contradicción tiene que ver con una tensión sexual permanente y en simultáneo un sentido de la propiedad privada extremadamente arraigado. Los celos nacen a borbotones, las peleas por mujeres o por hombres abundan. “Este es mi polvo y que nadie se acerque” es la consigna, y si estoy faltando a la verdad que alguien me desmienta. Pero les juro, es así. Por supuesto, el aspecto trágico de los celos exacerbados es que muchas veces derivan en homicidios, pero acá, a diferencia de otros lugares, esta práctica no solo es patrimonio de los hombres, sino que hay, más bien, un poco más de equidad de género. 

Entonces, la situación en una fiesta cargada de hormonas y baile caribeño donde la gente se toca y se insinúa entre tragos, vista de lejos por un observador paranoico, tiene el mismo aspecto que un niño de 5 años jugando con una pelota que en realidad es una bomba.
