Teníamos un perro. Hace mucho. Te estoy hablando de cuando yo era chico así como vos. Tu abuelo y yo sabíamos ir seguido a cazar y pescar. Jorge, se llamaba. Era un ovejero alemán mezclado con vaya a saber qué otra raza. Grandote. Nos acompañaba a todas partes. También lo llevábamos cuando íbamos de viaje o para cazar. Tu abuelo decía que los perros con paladar negro eran los más bravos. Y el Jorge tenía paladar negro. Con nosotros era bueno y obediente pero guay de que alguien cruzara el cerco de la casa sin aplaudir porque el Jorge se le plantaba adelante, mostrando los dientes, y el que fuera que quisiera entrar no se podía mover ni un cachito porque se pudría todo. Siempre decía que los perros chicos o de raza pura eran cosa de maricones.

            En el barrio había otros perros. Muchos. Imaginate, no era un barrio como éste. Era casi campo. La casa la vendieron hace mucho, pero un día te voy a llevar así conocés. Había muchos terrenos loteados y en esa época no habían construido tanto, así que cada casa tenía un montonazo de patio para los costados, adelante y atrás. Todos los vecinos tenían perros. Y estaban los perros sueltos, que eran unos cuantos también.

            Con tu abuelo también íbamos a trabajar. En esa época yo era muy chico para ayudarlo con los arreglos de electricidad, plomería o gas, pero él me llevaba igual. Para que le cebe mate, mire y aprenda. Porque era una forma de hacerme hombre. Si estaba de vacaciones y no iba al colegio, entonces tenía que salir con él para aprender. Porque quedarse en casa con la mamá, ayudando en la cocina o en el jardín, era cosa de putos y un hijo de él jamás sería puto.

            Una vuelta volvíamos de hacer una instalación en una casa muy grande, fuera de la ciudad. La chata se había roto y tuvimos que ir y volver en colectivo. La parada quedaba como a diez cuadras de casa. Había un camino de tierra que daba a las entradas de las demás casas y por ahí volvimos caminando.

            Estaba atardeciendo esa vez, se había levantado un viento seco. Andábamos los dos con los ojos casi cerrados y tu abuelo se quejaba porque no podía prender un pucho con ese viento.

            Cuando faltaban unas dos cuadras para llegar a la entrada de casa, aparecieron los perros. Eran unos diez o doce, no me acuerdo el número preciso. Pero del miedo que tuve ese día sí que me acuerdo. Eran perros grandes pero medio flacos. No los había visto antes por ahí. Estaban muy nerviosos, gruñían y tosían de forma rara. Me acuerdo de que tu abuelo dijo que parecían más hienas que perros. Que si no eran hienas, eran otra cosa, pero que perros no eran.

            Nos rodearon y no nos dejaban avanzar ni retroceder. Temblaban. El viejo me dijo que ni se me ocurriera moverme porque se nos venían encima, pero que tampoco tuviera miedo porque eso los pone más nerviosos y nos iban a comer vivos. Sacó un poco de fiambre que había sobrado de la vianda que llevamos y se los tiró. Los perros miraron un segundo y se volvieron contra nosotros.

            Tu abuelo me dijo que, cuando él diera la orden, yo empezara a correr con toda y buscara la escopeta que tenía en el garage. Dejó las herramientas en el piso, se sacó la campera y se envolvió un brazo con ella. Con la otra mano agarró un cuchillo corto para cortar asado que siempre llevaba con él. Ahora es cuando hay que demostrar que los huevos no se tienen de adorno, dijo.

            Cuando me hizo la seña con la cara salí corriendo y los perros se pusieron como locos. Se le fueron todos encima. Un par me persiguieron a mí. No había forma de correr tanta distancia sin que me alcanzaran, así que me trepé a un árbol que había al costado del camino. Uno se me prendió a la pierna de un tarascón y me tironeaba para abajo. Me agarré fuerte del árbol con las manos y con la otra pierna le pateé la cabeza lo más fuerte que pude. Costó, pero me soltó. Sangraba bastante y dolía como la puta madre, pero en ese momento tenía tanto miedo que casi no sentí nada hasta que estuve a salvo.

            A tu abuelo no le fue mejor. Los perros lo mordieron por todos lados. Tenía uno mordiéndole cada pierna, otro prendido al brazo protegido mientras que con el brazo libre tiraba cuchilladas para todos lados. Clavaba, tajeaba y pateaba todo lo que podía, pero eran muchos y lo voltearon. Los dos que me perseguían también se le fueron encima. Yo aproveché y salí corriendo como pude hasta casa, para buscar la escopeta.

            Antes de que llegue a casa, apareció el Jorge.

            Vino embaladísimo y se metió en el medio de la pelea.

            Cuando volví con la escopeta, estaba el Jorge echándolos a todos. Había sangre por todas partes. Tu abuelo y él pelearon codo a codo como gladiadores romanos, te aseguro. Jorge mordía al cuello. El viejo clavaba el cuchillo y repartía puñetazos como podía. Hasta hoy nunca vi tanta sangre junta.

            Le alcancé la escopeta a tu abuelo y él les disparó a los cinco que quedaban vivos. Hubo dos que alcanzaron a escaparse y nunca más aparecieron.

            Tu abuelo lo llevó en brazos al Jorge. Estaba bastante herido. Yo volví arrastrando la pierna. Cuando llegamos a la casa, tu abuela nos desinfectó las heridas y nos vendó con lo que había. El viejo se sirvió un whisky y me convidó a mí en un vaso un poco más chico. Alternaba puteadas con chistes. Que nunca se había cruzado con perros tan hijos de puta. Que no parecían perros. Que los pingos se muestran en la pista y que hoy el Jorge y yo habíamos demostrado hombría. Porque los machos se defienden con lo que tienen y pelean hasta el final, solos o en equipo. Pero que sin un perro bravo como el Jorge hubiéramos estado en el horno. Al Jorge también le dio un sorbito de whisky para que se relaje, pobre.

            Fue como un par de semanas después que estaba mi viejo en el patio, cortando leña, cuando pasó. Estaba atardeciendo y hacía mucho frío. Tu abuelo estaba terminando de cortar un par de troncos para la salamandra. Yo iba y venía llevando maderos para la casa. En eso se acercó despacito, rengueando. Estaba cicatrizando, todavía. Se sienta delante del viejo y lo mira fijo, tranquilo y serio. Él no le dio mucha bola pero después de un rato se quedó mirándolo con el hacha en la mano. Pasó un rato largo, que pareció durar hasta que se terminó de esconder el sol.

            El Jorge abrió el hocico lentamente. Lo volvió a cerrar. Bajó la cabeza como buscando algo y volvió a abrirlo, muy despacio. Mi viejo y yo aguantamos la respiración. El Jorge tomó aire y dijo: “Soy gay”.

            A tu abuelo se le cayó el hacha de las manos y se quedó duro. Se le aflojaron las piernas y cayó de rodillas. Jorge se le acercó y le quiso lamer la mano. Tu abuelo lo abrazó. Lo abrazó fuerte. Al principio el Jorge estaba quieto, pero después se quiso salir. Tu abuelo no lo soltó. Lo apretó con más fuerza contra su pecho. Cerró los ojos y la boca se le torció en un gesto raro que era como una sonrisa para abajo. Le empezaron a salir lágrimas. Cuando lo soltó, tenía la cara empapada. El cuerpo del Jorge cayó, flojo, al piso. Sin un suspiro cayó. El abuelo prendió un pucho y largó la primera pitada muy despacio. Después me mandó adentro. Yo miré por la ventana hasta que me quedé dormido. Se quedó sentado, fumando, al lado del Jorge casi hasta que se hizo de día. Cuando me desperté ya lo había enterrado.

            Esa fue la única vez que lo vi llorar a tu abuelo, hijo.
