La patóloga pediátrica argentina Marta Cohen afirmó hoy que la variante Delta del coronavirus “es un 120% más contagiosa que el virus inicial de Wuhan”, en China, y remarcó que con la vacuna se puede sobrellevar “de una mejor manera” la situación.
La profesional, distinguida con la “Orden del Imperio” por su investigación de más de diez años sobre la muerte súbita de niños lactantes en la ciudad de Sheffield, dijo que en el Reino Unido con la nueva variante que se originó en India “los casos se duplican cada once días”, por lo que estimó que “es un 120% más contagiosa que el virus inicial de Wuhan, cuando surgió en diciembre” de 2019.
En este sentido, explicó en diálogo con Radio Nacional que “el virus cambia muy rápido y nosotros nos adaptamos muy lento,” y precisó que cuando se logra modificar una vacuna para combatir una nueva variante “ya es vieja”.
Respecto a la letalidad de la variante Delta, la especialista reveló los datos de una comparación del número de casos en el Reino Unido del 27 de junio, aún en la curva ascendente de la tercera ola, con un valor similar registrado el 5 de febrero, en plena ola de la variante Alfa originada en territorio británico.
Ante el mismo número de 15.000 infectados, se registraron 744 muertos en febrero y 11 en junio cuando ya circulaba la variante Delta.
A su vez, las internaciones fueron menores, 227 pacientes en junio y 2.005 en febrero.
Cohen atribuyó esta diferencia estadísticamente significativa a la campaña de vacunación del Reino Unido que alcanzó al 62% de la población con dos dosis.
“Con la vacuna podemos sobrevivirlo mejor, obviamente tenemos que seguir distanciados”, sostuvo la médica y aseguró que “en este momento de pandemia, la vacuna que nos toca es la que nos tenemos que dar”.
“Tenemos que perder el miedo a las vacunas”, continuó y explicó que “está demostrado que lo único que ayuda para la pandemia, además del distanciamiento social, son los testeos y las vacunas”.
En otro orden, precisó que la variante Delta es “muy evolucionada con respecto a la variante del principio, en la cual todas las vacunas basaron su desarrollo”, por lo que con una sola dosis tanto de AstraZeneca como de Pfizer “la inmunidad es del 33%”.
“En cambio, a las dos semanas de la segunda dosis tanto para Oxford AstraZeneca como para Pfizer la inmunidad es adecuada”, apuntó.
También advirtió que como el virus evoluciona, “las personas que ya tuvieron Covid-19 pueden volver a contagiarse” y enfatizó en continuar utilizando el barbijo.
“El barbijo siempre protege, tiene que cubrir la boca y la nariz” y, en caso de contagio, son menores los síntomas porque “se tiene menos carga viral por el filtro del barbijo”, finalizó.
