Científicos sudafricanos vigilan una nueva variante del coronavirus que posee una tasa de mutación poco habitual y cuya frecuencia aumentó gradualmente en los últimos meses, informó el lunes el Instituto Nacional de Enfermedades transmisibles de Sudáfrica (NICD, por sus siglas en inglés).
La variante, conocida con el nombre de C.1.2 fue señalada la semana pasada por la Plataforma de Investigación, Innovación y Secuenciación del Kwazulu Natal (Krisp) en un estudio aun no publicado.
Mientras que la mayoría de las infecciones por covid-19 en Sudáfrica están siendo actualmente provocadas por la variante delta -identificada por primera vez en India-, C.1.2 llamó la atención de los científicos pues muta casi dos veces más rápido que las otras variantes ya observadas.
Hasta ahora C.1.2 fue detectada en todas las provincias sudafricanas, así como en otras partes del mundo, especialmente en China, en Mauricio, Nueva Zelanda y Reino Unido.
No es sin embargo muy frecuente para ser clasificada “variante digna de interés” o “variante inquietante”, como lo son las variantes delta (la surgida en India) y beta (aparecida en Sudáfrica en 2020), ambas muy contagiosas.
Los científicos del NICD aseguraron el lunes que C.1.2 no está “presente sino en bajos niveles” y que es muy temprano para determinar su evolución.
“A este nivel, no tenemos datos experimentales para confirmar como reacciona en términos de sensibilidad a los anticuerpos”, explicó Penny Moore, investigadora en el NICD.
Sudáfrica es el país más afectado del continente africano, con 2,7 millones de casos registrados hasta ahora, de los cuales 81.830 muertes.
