El Consorcio Proyecto PAIS -creado desde el Ministerio de Ciencia, Tecnología e Innovación- envió el último reporte de vigilancia de variantes de SARS-CoV-2 en la provincia de La Pampa. El informe reporta principalmente datos relevados de la Semana Epidemiológica 20.
De un conjunto de muestras analizadas de pacientes con COVID 19 que dieron positivas por RT-PCR para SARS CoV2 en diferentes laboratorios de la provincia de La Pampa, se seleccionaron un total de 40 para ser secuenciadas en el nodo central del Consorcio PAIS (Laboratorio de Virología del Hospital de Niños Ricardo Gutiérrez de CABA). Se pudieron secuenciar con éxito 38 muestras. De estas muestras secuenciadas, dos (5,3%) corresponden a la variante ALPHA (linaje B.1.1.7, Reino Unido), 30 (78,9%) corresponden a la variante GAMMA (linaje P.1, Manaos) y seis casos (15,8%) presentan mutaciones compatibles con la variante Lambda (linaje C.37, variante Andina).
Las mutaciones son naturales en el proceso de evolución y adaptación de los virus por eso la ocurrencia de variantes del virus SARS-CoV-2 que causa la COVID-19 es esperable. El monitoreo es clave para detectar los cambios que puedan ocurrir, por eso la vigilancia genética debe continuar para detectar a tiempo el impacto en la transmisibilidad, la gravedad de la COVID-19 y la eficacia de las vacunas.
Cuando estas variantes tienen un impacto o riesgo potencial para la salud pública, se consideran variantes de preocupación (VOC, por sus siglas en inglés). Las cuatro variantes de preocupación que se han detectado en las Américas incluyen las originadas en el Reino Unido (B 1.1.7), Sudáfrica (B.1.351), Brasil (P.1) e India (B.1.617). Sin embargo, aunque algunas (variantes de preocupación) han demostrado una mayor capacidad de replicación y transmisión, no son más agresivas o graves. Hasta ahora, no hay pruebas suficientes para inferir que las vacunas actualmente disponibles no funcionan contra estas variantes.
Cuanto mayor sea el nivel de transmisión del virus en las poblaciones, más probable será que se produzcan mutaciones virales y aparezcan nuevas variantes. Esta es otra de las razones por las que frenar la transmisión es tan importante.
