Las elecciones celebradas el martes en Estados Unidos dejaron como ganador en Dakota del Norte a David Andahl, el candidato republicano a la Cámara de Representantes que falleció por coronavirus el pasado 6 de octubre, a los 55 años, enfermedad de la que se contagió durante la campaña.
El triunfo del Andahl se produce por el incremento récord del voto por correo en estos comicios celebrados en medio de la pandemia, ya que muchas boletas llegaron antes del fallecimiento.
Andahl, un ganadero que nació y se crió en Dakota del Norte, se contagió de coronavirus durante la campaña electoral y murió en octubre, sin embargo continuó estando presente en las papeletas electorales.
Ya tras los primeros resultados de la noche, se anunció que David Andahl había ganado en Dakota del Norte, por lo que ahora será el Partido Republicano del estado quien nombrará un sustituto para el escaño que quedó vacante, indicó la cadena Fox News.
“Si un candidato fallecido recibe la mayoría de los votos, el candidato es elegido”, explicó Wayne Stenehjem, el fiscal general de Dakota del Norte, en una entrevista a ABC News.
“Sin embargo, si el candidato fallece se genera una vacante. La ley estatal indica el proceso para ocupar las vacantes de un cargo legislativo”, añadió.
