Para los países desarrollados, donde se están experimentando brotes generalizados de la pandemia, se proyecta una caída promedio de 6,1 % para el año en curso. Se pronostica que la mayoría de las economías del grupo se contraerán este año, incluido Estados Unidos (–5.9 %), Japón (–5,2%), Reino Unido (–6,5%), Alemania (–7,0 %), Francia (–7,2 %), Italia (–9,1 %) y España (–8,0%).
Asia emergente sería la única región con una tasa de crecimiento positiva en 2020, de 1%, aunque más de 5 puntos porcentuales por debajo de su promedio en la década anterior. En China, indicadores como la producción industrial, las ventas minoristas y la inversión en activos fijos sugieren que la contracción de la actividad económica en el primer trimestre podría haber sido de aproximadamente un 8% en términos anuales. Incluso con un fuerte repunte en el resto del año y un apoyo fiscal considerable, el Fondo proyecta que la economía crecerá a un moderado 1,2 % en 2020. Se pronostica también que varias economías de la región crecerán a tasas modestas, como India con una expansión de 1,9%.
Pero para otras regiones, incluida América Latina, se anticipa que “experimentarán desaceleraciones severas o directamente contracciones en la actividad económica”. La economía latinoamericana tendría una caída de 5,2% que será incluso más pronunciada para el principal socio comercial de la Argentina, es decir Brasil, cuyo PBI se contraería 5,3%, en tanto México sufriría un retroceso de 6,6%.
