Uno de los pocos ganadores indiscutibles en este contexto de pandemia es Mercado Libre, la empresa de comercio electrónico fundada por Marcos Gaperin, que ayer anunció un 70,5% de crecimiento en su facturación en el primer trimestre del año y hoy superó un récord en el valor de sus acciones.
En su balance, la compañía informó que entre enero y marzo de 2020 tuvo ingresos globales por US$652,1 millones por su actividad en los segmentos del comercio electrónico, la logística y el negocio financiero.
Los mercados financieros reaccionaron inmediatamente con una disparada de más del 20% en el valor de sus acciones, que llegaron a cotizar a US$777 (récord histórico para la compañía). La marca anterior era de febrero de este año, cuando había tocado los US$756 por acción.
Con esta suba, la empresa fundada en 1999 supera los US$37.800 millones de valuación bursátil en Wall Street y se consolida como la empresa más valiosa del país.
De acuerdo con el balance presentado ayer, Mercado Libre sumó 13 millones de usuarios nuevos en el período y ya supera los 43,2 millones en toda la región, con un crecimiento del 30,9%. A su vez, vendió 105,7 millones de productos a través de su plataforma. Esto representa un crecimiento del 27,7% frente al primer trimestre de 2019.
Según la compañía, las medidas de aislamiento dispuestas por los gobiernos para prevenir la expansión del coronavirus tuvieron un impacto acotado, con una baja en la cantidad de operaciones realizadas entre el 18 y el 24 de marzo. “Desde entonces, hemos visto un rebote significativo, con un crecimiento del 75,8% en la cantidad de unidades vendidas en abril”, detallan en el documento presentado a inversores.
A su vez, los registros de ventas reflejan un cambio en los hábitos de los usuarios, con bajas de las categorías “no esenciales” como electrónica o autopartes. En cambio, los segmentos de productos de salud, alimentos, juegos y juguetes dispararon sus ventas, con crecimientos superiores al 100%.
Dentro de sus diferentes unidades de negocio, el segmento fintech (Mercado Pago) fue el más dinámico, con un incremento del 45,2% en el período. En tanto, la actividad de venta de productos registro un crecimiento del 32,7%
