Si afinamos la mirada, notarán algo que de tan evidente se vuelve insignificante: todas las respiraciones humanas son parecidas. Sé que esto que digo es de poca o nula importancia, pero lo recuerdo porque así empezó la amenaza, el acecho: con la pureza de una exhalación en el ascensor, cuando el vecino nuevo me dejó entrar primero, con la cortesía que no tenían los otros, ya viejos inquilinos. No pasamos del saludo; no hablamos del clima, ni de trabajo, ni de nada; esos escasos segundos de descenso vibraron al compás simultáneo de nuestros pulmones ansiosos de nicotina.

La dependencia del Registro Civil es un lugar bastante intrascendente, por no decir decadente: traspasar datos, alguna gestión con orden de importancia, ubicar firmas manuscritas. Para matar el tiempo, les busco alguna forma o silueta con cierto sentido, para recordarla y armarle después algún cuento a Sabri antes de que se duerma; esas inspecciones caligráficas son una fuente de inspiración para mí. Algunas parecen elefantes, otras, ardillas, aunque la mayoría simula la estricta copia de un tornado que quiere empezar a barrerlo todo.

No soy de negar favores, al menos cuando están al alcance de mi mano. Y sobre todo cuando no interrumpen los capítulos de las series que vemos con Ester y que son nuestro lugar de encuentro. Aunque esa vez pusimos pausa, y mi señora decidió atender sin consultarme. El vecino nuevo había firmado la hoja pegada abajo, en la entrada del edificio, para notificarse de la reunión con el consorcio, pero venía a preguntar cuándo sería, ya que no tenía escrita la fecha. Se llamaba Ernesto. Ester le dijo cuándo se haría la reunión y seguidamente le dio la mano para decirle que contara con nosotros para lo que necesitara. Terminamos de ver un poco más tarde el capítulo interrumpido de la anteúltima temporada, lo que hizo que me quedara al otro día un rato más en la cama. Cuando salí para el trabajo, apurado, demoré unos segundos en el ingreso del edificio al pasar la vista por la notificación que habíamos firmado los inquilinos para la reunión; el vecino tenía una firma bastante parecida a la mía: el signo del infinito acostado con un relámpago que lo partía al medio.

Suelo enfermarme dos o tres veces al año. Pero menos mal que existe Ester; nunca se olvida de traerme el combo de pastillas, saquitos y sobres que me harán levantar rejuvenecido a los dos días. Pero decía, cuando me enfermo me quedo solo hasta que traen a Sabri del jardín. Tras avisar por teléfono al trabajo, mi ocupación se reduce, en esas horas de soledad, a la única que no me requiere esfuerzo, ya que la gripe que me agarra es como para voltear a un ejército faraónico. Me echo en el sillón o en la cama y escucho música, la que me gusta, repitiéndola y volviéndola a empezar como un disco rayado.

En la última recaída, días atrás, no necesité acomodar la selección preparada de Coldplay en la computadora porque desde al lado, en el departamento de Ernesto, se dejaba oír. Había ruido a platos y vasos, acompañados por los temas repetidos del primer disco de la banda inglesa. Apoyé el oído a la pared durante más de media hora, descalzo, y cuando noté que el recorrido de los temas era el que yo habría elegido, me acosté en silencio percibiendo mi atascada respiración. Debía dejar de fumar. Tuve un sueño afiebrado: era espectador y parte de la humanidad, y podía ver a la especie comouna interminable sucesión de fichas de dominó, en las que cada una ocupaba su estricto lugar. Esa imagen me tranquilizaba, pero al borde del bostezo, en el final de la pesadilla, las fichas comenzaban a caerse y a voltearse unas a otras. 

La reunión con el consorcio transcurrió más o menos como todas. Ernesto aportó lo justo, mi mujer renegó de los palieres, hubo quejas de otros inquilinos y promesas silenciosas. Contraviniendo lo dicho por el médico, decidí acompañar al vecino cuando salió a fumar. Nunca me había visto abrir una etiqueta; que fumáramos la misma marca era un don momentáneo para los relevos del vicio compartido; saqué uno de su etiqueta y luego él uno de la mía. Éramos -creo- los únicos dos seres que abríamos y extraíamos los cigarrillos por la base del paquete.

Busqué nombre y apellido completos en el trabajo, en la web. Ernesto tenía una vida común, era de esos cibernautas promedio, que cuelgan alguna que otra cosa, pero donde no se puede llegar a definir nunca su situación presente. Todo lo que aparecía remitía a un pasado mediato o lejano en su vida. Desde mascotas, eventos a los que asistió, anuncios. Esos días recuerdo que le inventé a Sabri historias que no tenían final, ya no las cerradas, conclusas, que surgían en mí a partir de las imágenes que sugerían las firmas que veía en el Registro, y que mi hija disfrutaba igualmente sin darse cuenta. O hacía que no se daba cuenta.

Llegaba el acto de cierre del jardín, y con Ester notábamos que Sabri andaba inquieta, gozando de la expectativa por la finalización de esa etapa. Pintamos juntos, armamos el disfraz, ensayamos lo que debía hacer y decir, y fue maravilloso. Lloramos con Ester con la normalidad con que lo permiten esas situaciones. Sabri había hecho de pato, y los flecos amarillos de papel crepe que le colgaban de todo el cuerpo hacían juego con el pico naranja. Al finalizar la obra, pasamos un rato más para comer algo y extender la experiencia que tanto trabajo les había costado a todos. Ester me conoce mucho; sabe que cuando tengo ganas de ir al baño, tengo ganas, nada lo frena, y debo ir a casa como sea. Tan seguro estoy de mis tripas como Napoleón o Alejandro Magno lo deben haber estado cuando se lanzaron a conquistar el mundo.

En el trayecto podía pensar poco, todavía estaba emocionado. Esa historia simple donde Sabri era el patito más lindo que iba a buscar a otros compañeritos feos para unirlos al grupo de los patos, para demostrar que todos somos iguales, y nadie está por encima del otro. Ni puede ocupar su lugar. Estacioné el auto a media cuadra del edificio. Abrí la puerta de entrada y cuando llegué al ascensor, Ernesto estaba por cerrar la rejilla metálica protectora desde adentro. Me invitó a subir, distinto gesto del que había tenido aquella primera vez que nos conocimos. Cuando me dijo que seguramente su mujer y su hijita vendrían pronto a verlo y a quedarse con él, intenté concentrarme en nuestra doble respiración de fumadores. Me dijo que estaban en la fiestita de fin de ciclo en el jardín, mujer e hija, y que estaba ansioso por escucharlas para saber todo lo que había hecho el patito más lindo en la representación.

  16. I think what you wrote was actually very reasonable.
    However, what about this? what if you wrote a catchier post title?
    I ain’t saying your content is not good., but suppose you added a title that grabbed a person’s attention? I mean Seriado (Audio y texto) – is kinda
    vanilla. You could glance at Yahoo’s front page and note how
    they create article titles to grab people to open the links.
    You might try adding a video or a picture or two to grab people excited about what you’ve written. In my opinion, it could bring your posts a little bit more interesting.
